Enchanting Kerala: A Journey Through God’s Own Country in November 22

After a prolonged period of Covid lockdown, the holiday season finally arrived. Owing to our last-minute planning, we found ourselves struggling to secure direct hotel bookings. Turning to the expertise of a local travel agency, ‘Iris Holidays,’ proved to be a wise decision. They offered us a competitive rate, comparable to what we might have found through individual online bookings. The service was swift and efficient. Our holiday manager, Mr. George, exhibited exceptional professionalism, meticulously tailoring our trip according to my specified itinerary and hotel preferences. His politeness and humility made our experience even more delightful.

We embarked on our journey aboard Air India’s flight at the early hour of 5:30 am. The flight experience was pleasant, complete with a satisfying breakfast service. The non-vegetarian option comprised delectable chicken sausages, fluffy eggs, chutney, croissant, tea, and a refreshing serving of aam doi (a Bengali sweet yogurt). Meanwhile, the vegetarian meal included upma, mini idlis, and flavorful sambar. The quality of the food met the usual standards expected from Air India flights, adding a smile to our travel experience!

Now, it was time to delve into the enchanting beauty and exquisite delicacies of God’s Own Country.

Day 1

At 7:30 am, we arrived at Kochi airport where we were warmly welcomed by Mr. Shyam, our assigned driver from Iris Holidays. His politeness and impeccable manners set a positive tone for our trip. We were provided with a clean and well-maintained Innova car for our journey. Heading straight to our first-day accommodation, Abad Plaza near MG Road in Kochi, we reached our destination by 9:30 am, eager to begin our Kerala adventure.

While waiting for our room to be ready, we took a short 15-minute drive to Marine Drive. This picturesque spot boasts a 3-kilometer-long walkway along the shores of Vembannattu Kayal. The serene atmosphere allowed us to leisurely stroll along the promenade, taking in the scenic beauty. For those seeking a bit more adventure, boating was also an option, adding an extra layer of enjoyment.

There were two types of boats available at Marine Drive. The shared boats charged 150 rupees per person for the ride. Our 7-year-old, @mylittleartist_aarav, enjoyed a free ride, accompanied by his parents.

The shared boat featured seating on both the ground level and the first level, providing a comfortable vantage point for the passengers. The boat ride lasted for about an hour, during which the guide pointed out several landmarks, including the Cochin Shipyard, different bridges, Bolgatty Island, and the Grand Hyatt Hotel. It was a captivating journey that allowed us to appreciate the rich tapestry of Kochi’s scenic attractions.

For those looking for a more private experience, single boats were available at a cost of about 3000 rupees. These boats had the capacity to accommodate approximately 3-4 persons, offering a more personalized boating experience.

Although the ideal time to visit Marine Drive is in the evening, we decided to explore its beauty in the morning due to our packed schedule for the day. Even in the early hours, the experience was captivating, and we managed to check this charming destination off our list before embarking on the rest of our day’s adventures.

Hotel Abad plaza:

We opted for a one-night stay at Abad Plaza, a comfortable 3-star hotel. The hotel’s multistory building greeted us, and upon entering, we found a well-appointed reception and lobby area with cozy seating arrangements, promising a pleasant and relaxing atmosphere. The rooms were generously spacious and tastefully furnished, providing a comfortable and inviting ambiance. Additionally, the cleanliness of the bathroom added to our overall positive experience.

Breakfast was served on the second floor of the hotel, offering a delightful spread. The menu featured a variety of local cuisines such as kalappam, idly, vada, sambar, chutney, upma, egg roast, and dosa, alongside the usual options like bread, eggs, sausages, juices, and pancakes. Despite the tempting variety, the service was a bit sluggish. However, given our plans for the day, which involved spending most of our time sightseeing outside, the overall stay at Abad Plaza was satisfactory, providing a good base for our adventures in Kochi.

Kochi tour:

After refreshing ourselves, we set out for a day of local sightseeing in Kochi.

BTH Subhiksha

We were eager to indulge in an authentic Kerala meal served on a banana leaf, just like the traditional Sadya. We found our way to BTH Subhiksha, where we were treated to a delightful spread, which you can see in the picture. The meal included a variety of dishes. They also served rice and payasam, providing us with a truly satisfying and authentic culinary experience. The best part was, the cost of the meal was quite reasonable, making our authentic Kerala dining experience not only delicious but also budget-friendly.

Once our appetites were thoroughly satisfied, we made our way to Mattancherry, where we explored the historical attractions including the Dutch Palace, Jew Town, and the Pardesi Synagogue.

Dutch palace:

The entrance fee for the Dutch Palace was a mere 5 rupees per person, with children below 15 years of age enjoying free entry. Our visit to the palace took approximately 30 minutes, allowing us to absorb the historical richness and architectural beauty within a short span of time.

Jew Town:

Adjacent to the Dutch Palace lies Jew Street, a vibrant market filled with shops showcasing an array of artifacts, handicrafts, and antiques. The atmosphere is lively, with merchants offering spices, perfumes, and incense sticks, creating a delightful sensory experience for visitors.

Pardesi Synagogue:

Just a short 10-minute walk from the Dutch Palace, we reached the Pardesi Synagogue, a place of worship for the Jewish community. Entrance fee was a nominal 10 rupees per person, including children. We spent approximately half an hour exploring the serene ambiance of the synagogue.

After our visit, we strolled outside and found ourselves amidst a bustling array of cafeterias and shops, tucked away in the narrow lanes surrounding the synagogue, creating an inviting and bustling atmosphere for visitors to enjoy.

Santa Cruz Cathedral Basilica:

Unfortunately, when we arrived at Santa Cruz Basilica, it was closed for visitors on the day of our visit, which happened to be a Sunday. Despite missing out on exploring this historical site, we continued our journey, embracing the spontaneity of our travels in Kochi.

Chinese fishing nets:

The Chinese fishing nets, unique to the Fort Kochi area, stand as a distinctive feature. Although we missed the morning fishing demonstration, the area still buzzed with activity when we arrived in the evening. Stalls lined the walkway, offering an assortment of goods.

Some local fishermen sold fresh fish, providing a tempting opportunity for a unique culinary experience. However, due to concerns about the hygiene in the area, we decided to err on the side of caution and refrained from making a purchase. Despite this, witnessing the age-old tradition of Chinese fishing nets was a captivating experience.

Saint Francis Church

Saint Francis Church, situated in Fort Kochi, Kochi, holds a rich historical legacy as one of the oldest European churches in India. Originally constructed in 1503, the church bears witness to the ambitious endeavors of European colonial powers in the subcontinent. Notably, the Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama, who passed away in Kochi during his third visit to India in 1524, was initially interred within the grounds of this venerable church. Being one of the oldest churches, it holds deep associations with the fort’s heritage.

There was no entrance fee to visit this remarkable place of worship. Our time here lasted about 20 minutes.

The Chinese fishing nets, the Fort Kochi museum, and Saint Francis Church were all located within a leisurely 15-minute walking distance, allowing us to seamlessly explore these iconic landmarks on feet.

Fort Kochi Museum:

At Fort Kochi Museum, we delved into the rich history of this ancient fort, tracing its origins through time. Despite much of the fort being demolished, the museum served as a valuable repository of historical artifacts and old pictures, offering a glimpse into the area’s vibrant past. There is no entrance fee. Spending around 30 minutes here, we immersed ourselves in the captivating exhibits, deepening our understanding of Fort Kochi’s intriguing heritage.

Visiting the Synagogue and Saint Francis Church, we observed the customary practice of removing our footwear before entering these sacred places.

After a day of exploring the city, we found our energy waning as evening approached. By the time our Kochi city tour concluded, fatigue had settled in, prompting us to retire to our room for a well-deserved rest.

Day 2

After a hearty breakfast, our first stop was the Folklore Museum before continuing our journey to Alleppey.

Folklore museum:

Our visit to the Folklore Museum offered a deep dive into Kerala’s ancient culture and lifestyle. This privately-owned museum charged an entrance fee of 100 rupees per person, with an additional 100 rupees for photography privileges. The museum, spanning three floors accessible via wooden stairs, was a treasure trove of artifacts.

Inside, there were shops selling jewelry, clothes, and snacks. Moreover, on the second floor, they showcased an intriguing collection of antiques available for purchase. Immersing ourselves in this cultural exploration, we spent approximately 40 minutes appreciating the rich heritage on display.

For more detailed information about the Folklore Museum, including its exhibits, events, and history, you can visit their official website at https://www.keralafolkloremuseum.org/

Alleppy:

Continuing our journey, we headed towards Alleppey, a scenic drive that took us approximately 2 hours. The journey was smooth, allowing us to enjoy the picturesque landscapes along the way.

Houseboat:

Upon reaching Alleppey, we proceeded to the office of Pickadley houseboats where we were informed that due to our last-minute booking, we were allotted a 2-bedroom Classic Legend boat instead of the Royal suite mentioned in our package.

http://www.pickadlyhouseboats.com

From the office, it was a brief 10-minute walk to the boat’s anchoring point. A helpful boat attendant assisted us with our luggage, guiding us across a few boats via a bridge until we reached ours. The houseboat, a part of the premium category, was spacious and reasonably well-maintained. Given its premium status, we had the luxury of using the air conditioner throughout our stay, a feature not available in lower-tier categories except during the night.

Inside, there was a comfortable sitting area equipped with a television and a speaker. It’s worth noting that the television required a cellular data connection for streaming content as there was no cable or Wi-Fi on the boat. The bedrooms, while not overly spacious, were adequate for our party of three to rest. However, the bathroom and furniture seemed quite basic and in need of some repairs.

We were warmly welcomed aboard with refreshing coconut water as a welcome drink. Throughout our stay, we were accompanied by a dedicated team of three members – a sailor, a cook, and a housekeeper. Their cordiality and attention to our preferences made our experience special.

As we embarked on our journey, we sailed through the picturesque lake, eventually anchoring for about an hour to enjoy a delightful lunch. The lunch spread, in true Kerala style, featured an array of dishes including Thoran, rice, fish fry, chicken, and the delectable payasam. The freshness and flavors of the food were impeccable.

Additionally, a fresh fruit basket adorned the dining table. There is an option to customize the menu based on our preferences, if informed beforehand.

After our sumptuous meal, the houseboat gently resumed its journey on the serene waters of Vembanad Lake. The view that greeted us was nothing short of mesmerizing – an endless expanse of the lake stretched before us, with other houseboats dotting the distance. The picturesque scene was framed by a thin, green border of swaying coconut trees, creating a tranquil and enchanting atmosphere that made our houseboat experience truly magical.

In the evening, our houseboat made a brief stop, anchoring for about 20 minutes near a small island. The island boasted only a general store, a fish shop, and a couple of houses. The boat staff informed us that we could purchase fresh fish from the shop, which they would then prepare for our dinner.

We bought 2 tiger prawns for 1000 rupees, ensuring a delightful and freshly caught addition to our evening meal.

In the early evening, we were treated to a delightful snack of tea and French fries aboard our houseboat. As an added bonus, Iris Holidays offered us a complimentary small boat ride. This motorized boat took us through the intricate network of small canals within the backwaters. Along the way, we marveled at the houses lining the canals and observed the use of small boats for transporting goods and people, providing us with a glimpse into the local way of life.

The boat ride lasted for about an hour, during which we had the opportunity to immerse ourselves in the serene surroundings. The small boat then safely returned us to our houseboat.

Our main houseboat continued to sail for a while, finally anchoring at around 6:30 pm for the night. As the evening settled, we enjoyed quality family time, undisturbed by the outside world. We played music, watched videos, and engaged in some fun games until dinner was served at 8 pm.

For dinner, we were treated to a delicious spread that included fish curry, ladyfinger (okra), chicken curry, chapati, dal (lentils), rice, and the delightful Prawn fry. The meal was a perfect finale to our day, enjoyed in the tranquil ambiance of the backwaters, making our houseboat experience truly unforgettable.

Day 3:

On the following morning, our houseboat journey resumed at 7 am. We got ready and enjoyed a delicious breakfast served at 7:30 am. The breakfast spread included idly, dosa, sambar, bread and butter, and a steaming cup of tea.

As we continued our journey along the backwaters, we gradually made our way back to the point where we had initially boarded the boat. By 9:30 am, we had reached our destination, and it was time to disembark. We once again navigated across a couple of boats to reach the shore, accompanied by the boat staff who assisted with our luggage.

It’s customary to offer tips to the boat staff for their excellent service. We expressed our appreciation with a tip before setting off for our next destination.

Our journey continued as we headed towards Munnar. Along the way, our driver took us to a shop where we had the opportunity to purchase Kerala clothes, adding a touch of local culture to our travel experience. I had a delightful shopping experience, picking up traditional Kerala dress material and a Mundu for my son. The shop, bustling with tourists buying sarees and various clothing items, offered fixed and reasonable rates.

Continuing our journey, we began our ascent towards Munnar around 10:30 am. During our drive, we made a brief stop at ‘The Rasa’ restaurant, where my son enjoyed a tasty dosa. As we ventured further, the road led us through winding mountainous paths, uphill. For those prone to motion sickness, it is a good idea to take necessary precautions and medications beforehand, ensuring a comfortable and enjoyable journey through the picturesque landscapes of Munnar.

On our way to Munnar, we were captivated by the breathtaking beauty of two magnificent waterfalls – Valara and Cheriyappa. These cascading falls, surrounded by lush greenery, added to the enchanting scenery. Near the waterfalls, we found small shops selling toys and local delicacies, allowing us to indulge in the natural splendor while enjoying some local treats.

Our journey continued with a visit to the Spice Gardens and Elephant Park, popular attractions in Munnar. Numerous places in the area offer similar experiences, and we found that the entry fees and charges were consistent across most of them.

Elephant ride:

We opted for a 15-minute elephant ride at the Elephant Park, paying 600 rupees per person. Despite our reservations about the practice due to concerns for the animal’s welfare, we decided to experience it, especially for our son. However, the ride can be uncomfortable, especially for elderly individuals or those with back pain. The elephant walked along a kaccha road amidst the rubber plantations. During the ride, the mahout captured multiple photos and videos for us, and afterward, he encouraged us to offer some money to the elephant, adding to the complexity of the experience.

Spice garden visit:

There was an option for a guided walk in the spice garden adjacent to Elephant park, lasting about 20 minutes and priced at 100 rupees per person. We decided to take this opportunity, and it turned out to be an intriguing experience. The guide showed us a variety of spice and medicinal plants, providing us with valuable insights into the rich flora of the region. This educational and informative walk added depth to our understanding of the local spices and their medicinal uses, making it a worthwhile and enriching experience.

The shop, associated with the garden, offered not just spices and medicinal products but also ayurvedic health advice. They assured the quality of their spices, emphasizing that they were harvested from the adjoining plantation without oil extraction.

I purchased cardamom, nutmeg, and a variety of spice powders both for personal use and as souvenirs. Interestingly, the prices were consistent with what we found in Munnar market and other spice gardens we visited during our journey.

Continuing our drive towards Munnar, we were greeted by vast expanses of tea gardens, painting the landscape with vibrant hues. The sight of these lush tea plantations added to the charm of our journey, creating a picturesque backdrop for our travels in this beautiful region.

Tall Trees resort:

By 3 pm, we arrived at the resort nestled amidst the forested mountains, a serene sanctuary a short distance from Munnar town. The natural beauty of this place was truly enchanting, immediately captivating our senses.

Warmly welcomed by the attentive staff at the reception, we were greeted with a unique welcome drink – a medicinal coffee infused with an array of spices and ginger. This aromatic concoction set the tone for our stay, offering a taste of the local flavors.

The resort, situated in this idyllic location, offered a range of in-house activities, promising a delightful and enriching experience amidst the tranquility of nature.

Graciously, the resort manager upgraded our accommodation from a Cinnamon cottage, a single room, to the more spacious Saffron cottage, a luxurious suite complete with a sitting area and bedroom. The suite was generously appointed, boasting ample space, cleanliness, and every imaginable amenity, ensuring our stay was not just comfortable but indulgent. We were truly appreciative of the resort’s hospitality and attention to our comfort.

Adding to the charm of our suite, there was a balcony with a sitting area that provided us with a breathtaking view of the surrounding woods. The serene ambiance and natural beauty visible from our balcony enhanced our stay, creating a perfect spot to unwind and immerse ourselves in the tranquility of the surroundings

We had a wonderful time at the resort, enjoying the serene ambiance and the various amenities it offered. However, the uphill terrain might pose accessibility challenges for elderly individuals. Nevertheless, we had an enjoyable experience.

The temperature-controlled pool and jacuzzi provided a great source of entertainment, especially for my son, who had a fantastic time there. Additionally, the resort’s thoughtful design, including a bonfire area with a playground and children’s play area, ensure that families can unwind together and create lasting memories in the midst of nature.

On our first night at the resort, we opted for the buffet dinner at the restaurant, which was priced at 1000 rupees per person. The dinner spread was impressive, featuring a variety of dishes that appealed to our taste buds. The food was not only delicious but also a testament to the local culinary expertise.

The diverse breakfast spread and the courteous demeanor of the restaurant staff added to the overall positive atmosphere.

During our stay at the resort, we indulged in a range of activities that allowed us to connect deeply with the surrounding nature.

The morning fitness walk and the evening stress-free stroll both led us along a path that wove through the adjacent tea plantation. The serene ambiance during these walks was incredibly rejuvenating. The 15-minute journey before reaching the tea plantations provided a tranquil setting for our leisurely strolls, immersing us in the beauty of the natural surroundings.

One of the highlights was the Shola trail, a trek through the mountains and forests within the resort’s property. Though the trail presented challenges, particularly for beginners, with its rocky paths, stream crossings, and steep uphill stretches, the effort was rewarded with awe-inspiring views of the forest. During our trek, we were fortunate enough to spot a giant squirrel, a delightful encounter that added a touch of wildlife excitement to our adventure.

Regrettably, we missed the tea tasting session at the resort, a missed opportunity to delve into the rich flavors of the region’s renowned tea.

Day 4

Munnar sightseeing:

Our Munnar exploration began with an exhilarating Jeep ride, a unique experience that took us to the lesser-explored corners of this picturesque town. These Jeeps, sanctioned by the forest department, ventured into parts of Munnar that were otherwise inaccessible. The ride, spanning around 3 hours, covered six different points, revealing the untouched beauty of the region. However, a word of caution for those with back pain—the rough roads might pose some discomfort.

The cost for the Jeep ride was 4000 rupees per Jeep, accommodating a maximum of 5 people. The pricing was fixed, and although negotiation was not initially entertained, we noticed several other Jeep services along the way, suggesting that there might be room for negotiation if one is inclined to try.

The Jeep ride took us on a thrilling journey to six distinct points that showcased the raw beauty of Munnar. We explored captivating spots like the enchanting Ripple waterfall, traversed the thrilling Hanging Bridge, visited a scenic Dam, and experienced the famous Echo Point, where a scene from the movie ‘Chennai Express’ was filmed. Additionally, we witnessed the beauty of the Sunset/Sunrise Point.

Our Jeep ride adventure commenced at 10 am, and by 1 pm, we had completed the thrilling journey, returning to our starting point. These three hours were filled with exploration and discovery, offering us a memorable glimpse into the hidden gems of Munnar’s landscape.

Eravikulum National park:

After our exhilarating Jeep ride, we set off for Eravikulam National Park, a 40-minute journey from our previous destination. At the park, we purchased entry tickets at the counter, which were priced at 200 rupees for adults and 150 rupees for children. One could also prebook tickets online for convenience.

Once inside, we proceeded to the bus boarding point, located one level above the ticket counter. After a brief wait in the queue, we boarded the bus, embarking on a 30-minute ride up the mountain. The bus journey took us to the reserved forest area, home to the majestic Nilgiri Tahr, a rare mountain goat species. At the drop-off point, there was a small exhibit narrating the park’s story, along with essential amenities like a cafeteria, washrooms, and a souvenir shop.

From the drop-off point, we walked uphill to spot the Nilgiri Tahrs. We trekked halfway and were rewarded with the sight of a herd of these magnificent creatures grazing amidst the misty mountains. The misty mountain views from this vantage point were truly breathtaking.

After spending about 45 minutes enjoying the breathtaking views, we caught the return bus, arriving back at the parking lot by 3:30 pm. For those unable to walk uphill, there was an option to take special Eco vehicles at an extra cost (7500 rupees), accommodating up to 5 people. These vehicles could transport visitors beyond the bus drop point and back, offering a convenient solution for those with mobility concerns.

Our next stop on this adventure was the Tea Museum.

Tea Museum:

Following our visit to Eravikulam National Park, we made our way to the Ripple Tea Museum, a journey that took roughly 20 minutes. At the museum’s entrance, we purchased our tickets, eager to explore the fascinating history and evolution of tea plantations and tea processing.

Inside, multiple rooms housed exhibitions that showcased the rich heritage of tea production in the region. We began with a captivating documentary that delved into the history and development of the area, offering valuable insights during its 30-minute runtime. The museum then led us to a section where we could observe machines demonstrating the processing of both CTC and orthodox tea. A brief but informative demonstration provided instructions on the correct method of preparing tea.

Additionally, the museum featured an outlet selling various products from Ripple and High Range. I couldn’t resist picking up a packet of regular tea powder, black tea, and eucalyptus oil. The products were sold at printed MRPs, and some items even had special offers like ‘buy 3 get 1 free.’

Our visit to the museum spanned about 2 hours, and by the time we finished, most other attractions had closed for the day. We took advantage of the remaining daylight to capture some beautiful photos in the adjacent tea gardens and indulged in some shopping in Munnar market. Here, we found souvenirs like fridge magnets, toys, and chocolates. Interestingly, the chocolates in Munnar market were priced at 700-800 rupees per kilogram, significantly cheaper than the ones I had bought near the spice garden, which were priced at 1200 rupees per kilogram. Both chocolates were of similar quality. However, I had a preference for the spices at the Spice garden over the one’s in market area.

With our day filled with exploration and discoveries, we headed back to the resort in anticipation of enjoying the bonfire and a delightful dinner.

Day 5

Our day began with an adventurous trek along the Shola trail, following a hearty breakfast. This trek not only offered breathtaking views of the surrounding forests but also provided us with the exciting opportunity to spot a Giant Indian squirrel along the way. Despite the unparalleled beauty, the trek was quite challenging, leaving us tired and exhausted. We commenced the trek at 9:30 am and returned to our room by 10:40 am, having experienced the wilderness and tranquility of the area.

Following our morning adventure, I treated myself to a spa appointment that I had pre-booked at the resort. Opting for the Rejuvenation program, I enjoyed a soothing body massage followed by a relaxing steam bath. The session lasted for about an hour, rejuvenating my senses and providing a perfect interlude of relaxation.

After my spa session and some leisurely moments, we embarked on the remaining sightseeing activities in Munnar around 1 pm.

Mattupetty Dam and Echo Point:

About an hour’s drive from the resort, we reached the picturesque Mattupetty Dam, a site more enchanting than a mere water storage facility. The dam creates the stunning Mattupetty Lake, a tranquil water body that beckoned visitors for various water activities. Boating, kayaking, and round boat rides were available, priced at 400 rupees for approximately 20 minutes of water fun. However, my son, having already enjoyed his time in the pool earlier that day, wasn’t keen on more water adventures. Instead, we indulged in some local snacks at the nearby shacks before heading to our next destination.

Our next stop was the Echo Point, just a 20-minute drive ahead. Nestled on the banks of a serene lake, Echo Point treated us to a panoramic view of the surrounding hills and the lush, evergreen forest cover. On our way, we even had the luck to spot some wild elephants, adding an unexpected touch of wildlife adventure to our journey. By 3 pm, we had explored both these scenic points, marveling at the natural beauty that Munnar had to offer.

Rose Garden:

Our journey continued with a visit to the Rose Garden, located just 30 minutes away from Echo Point. Maintained by the forest department, this garden showcased a stunning variety of flowers in full bloom. Entry fees were a reasonable 50 rupees per adult, making it an accessible and enjoyable stop on our itinerary. We dedicated approximately 40 minutes to exploring the vibrant displays of flora, reveling in the beauty and colors of the garden.

Kathakali Dance and Kalaripayattu:

At 4:20 pm, we set off to explore the cultural heritage of Munnar through two captivating shows: Kathakali dance and Kalaripayattu. These performances, conducted at two venues in Munnar, commenced at 5 pm. Ticket prices varied based on seating arrangements, with options ranging from 300 to 500 rupees. Opting for the middle row tickets at 400 rupees each, we spent a total of 2400 rupees for both shows.

The Kathakali dance, held from 5 pm to 6 pm, offered a mesmerizing blend of devotion, drama, dance, music, costumes, and makeup. It transformed ancient stories, primarily from Indian epics, into a divine experience for the audience, leaving us spellbound with the intricacies involved in the performance.

Following the Kathakali dance, from 6 pm to 7 pm, we witnessed the awe-inspiring Kalaripayattu show. Kalaripayattu, one of the oldest surviving martial arts in the world, holds a significant place in Indian martial arts history, captivating us with its traditional techniques and grace.

After the shows, we had the opportunity to take photos with the talented artists and express our appreciation by offering rewards for their outstanding performances.

By 8 pm, we had returned to the resort, enriched by the cultural experiences and ready to unwind after a day filled with exploration and entertainment.

Day 6

On our final day in Munnar, after a hearty breakfast, we began our journey back to Kochi. The road downhill allowed the vehicle to move swiftly, but unfortunately, my son experienced motion sickness. It’s a reminder for sensitive travelers to take necessary precautions, such as medication and keeping the journey light.

During our journey, we made a stop at a Spice Garden for a brief break. Here, I couldn’t resist the temptation and purchased some more spices. Surprisingly, the cost of the spices remained consistent across all the places I had visited earlier.

By 2:30 pm, we had arrived at our destination, the luxurious Taj Malabar Resort and Spa in Kochi.

Taj Malabar Resort and Spa:

For our final stay in God’s own country, we chose the Taj Malabar Resort and Spa, a splendid retreat located on Welligdon Island, a man-made marvel adjacent to the Kochi shipyard. Situated on Welligdon Island, the resort enjoys a strategic location next to the Kochi shipyard. Its prime position offers breathtaking views of the harbor and the surrounding natural beauty.

Upon our arrival, we were greeted by plush interiors and an atmosphere of luxury. The reception area boasted a grand, well-decorated lobby, with the restaurant and conference room on one side, and a lush lawn and waterside lounge on the other.

Our choice was a harbor view tower room, which, although not incredibly spacious, offered a stunning vista of the harbor. The room provided us with a comfortable haven to unwind, overlooking the picturesque waters, creating a tranquil ambiance for our stay.

The resort generously offered complimentary evening tea and snacks by the waterside at 4:30 pm, creating a serene atmosphere as we watched the sun dip below the horizon. Following this delightful treat, we embarked on a boat ride (included in the stay) at 5:30 pm, gliding through the lake while marveling at landmarks such as the metro station, Fort Kochi, Chinese fishing nets, and the Shipyard. This enchanting boat ride, lasting about 45 minutes, allowed us to soak in the beauty of Kochi’s coastal charms.

Upon our return to the resort, we leisurely strolled around the premises, capturing precious moments with photographs. As the evening unfolded, we were treated to a mesmerizing dance performance of Bharatnatyam and Mohiniyattam by the poolside at 7 pm.

The resort offered several picturesque sitting areas by the waterside, providing a perfect setting to unwind and enjoy the evening. For young ones, a small kids playroom near the entrance gate provided a space for fun and games.

Inside the resort, souvenir shops beckoned, although I found the prices to be on the higher side. The bar at the resort had happy hours from 6 pm till 8 pm.

My son, however, found his own source of joy at the resort’s piano and happily entertained us with his musical skills.

Upon returning to our room, we discovered a thoughtful welcome gesture from the resort management: a small gift pack of spices, a charming touch that added to our sense of hospitality.

The resort offered two restaurants: ‘The Pepper,’ which served a multicuisine buffet dinner priced at 1785 rupees plus taxes per person, and ‘Rice Boat,’ offering authentic local cuisine. Opting for ‘Rice Boat,’ we indulged in a full course Kerala menu, complemented by a simple yet comforting rice and dal for my son. The total cost of our meal was around 5400 rupees, with the dal rice accounting for 1500 rupees, a lot higher price in my opinion.

We had booked our stay with breakfast included. However, I realized that booking a package with one meal and breakfast along with the stay could be a more economical choice.

Day 7

Speaking of breakfast, the morning spread was a gastronomic delight. The menu was extensive, featuring both local delicacies and international options, ensuring that every palate was catered to. Breakfast at Taj Malabar Resort and Spa was not just a meal but a culinary adventure, setting a delightful tone for the last day of our stay.

As our memorable holiday in Kochi came to an end, we embarked on our journey back to Mumbai after a sumptuous breakfast. By 10 am, we were on our way to the airport, cherishing the last glimpses of Kerala’s scenic beauty.

During our ride to the airport, we made a delightful stop to purchase packets of Banana, Tapioca, and Jackfruit chips, as well as the famous Kerala halwa. These local treats served as sweet reminders of the flavors we had savored during our stay.

At 2 pm, we boarded our Indigo flight from Kochi airport, marking the conclusion of our wonderful vacation. The flight experience was typical of Indigo, ensuring a smooth journey back home.

As we soared into the sky, I couldn’t help but reflect on the incredible experiences and warm memories we had gathered in Kerala. The rich culture, exquisite cuisine, and the warm hospitality of the people had left an indelible mark, making our holiday in God’s own country truly unforgettable.
